rain gutters types

When considering the best type of gutter for your home, there are several important factors to keep in mind. Your roof’s existing structure and the average amount of rainfall your location receives are just two examples. You’ll also want to consider your personal style and design preferences.

When it comes to gutter systems, there really is no one-size-fits-all; the best rain gutter is the one that effectively channels water off and away from your roof and siding.

There are 3 main types of gutters to choose from, and each one comes in several different materials and colors. But for now, let’s start with understanding the different rain gutters types, which will help you make the best decision for your home.

Box Style Gutters

Box gutters are made to handle large amounts of water, so they tend to be much bigger than other gutter types. They’re usually used for commercial buildings that need adequate water drainage for a larger roof. Unlike other gutters, box style gutters are typically installed by tucking them under roof shingles, rather than hanging on the edge of a roof. They range in size from 7 - 10 inches.

Half-Round Gutters

Half-round gutters are simply a curved pipe with the top half exposed for collecting water. Although this can make them easier to clean, they usually take longer to install because they require brackets to be attached to the entire roof edge. This tends to make them heavier than other gutters, which can lead to loose hardware over time.

K-Style Gutters

The most common type of rain gutter, k-style gutters are attached to the fascia board that runs around the edge of your roof. The flat back on these gutters helps prevent water from running down your wall because of the flush fit. K-style gutters are easy to install and affordable, making them a popular choice for many homeowners. Standard sizes are between 5 and 6 inches.
